TYLER  2012/2/12

On Tuesday, April 17, at Caldwell Auditorium, the Tyler Independent School District (TISD) Foundation will recognize the top 20 graduating seniors and National Merit Scholars from John Tyler and Robert E. Lee High Schools, along with their most influential educators. This annual event, A Night of Shining Stars, is held for honored students, faculty, parents, guests, and donors to the TISD Foundation.

As a TISD Foundation board member, Gary Gross, M.D., is passionate about helping the students and faculty of the district. “Public education is the most important institution in our society. Ideally, public education can prepare our children to compete and succeed professionally and to interact with people of all backgrounds,” Dr. Gross said. “A Night of Shining Stars allows distinguished students from both high schools to choose the teacher that had the greatest impact on their life and to acknowledge that person at a very upbeat and touching event.”

In addition to his work with the TISD Foundation, Dr. Gross is also a member of the John Tyler High School Parent Teacher Organization.  He serves as president-elect for the Smith County Medical Society and he is a member of the Tyler Chamber of Commerce Medical Affairs Committee. Dr. Gross has been a member of the Tyler Chamber of Commerce Aviation Committee and the Smith County Health District Board of Directors, where he served as president of the board for two years. As a pilot, Dr. Gross donates his time and abilities to Grace Flights of America to help people in need of free air transportation for medical and humanitarian purposes.  He is also a volunteer physician at the Bethesda Health Clinic.

“I think the willingness to give of one’s self, especially when a true sacrifice of time or money is involved, is the greatest and [most] unique trait of the human race,” Dr. Gross said. “I feel fulfilled when I volunteer because of my great appreciation of my own blessings and the great pleasure I feel helping others.”

Born in Oxford, England, Dr. Gross has resided in Tyler for 28 years. He and his wife, Lisa, have been married nine years.  They are the parents of four adult daughters and the grandparents of Landon, age 4.  Dr. Gross earned his bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, and received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.

“I love living in Tyler. I feel surrounded by people who, like I am, are proud and excited to be a part of this community,” Dr. Gross said.  “I think the fact that there are so very many wonderful people in Tyler who are willing to reach out a hand to those in need in our community is what makes this such a positive and upbeat place to live.”
