Community volunteer Betty “BJ” Hornbostel is one of nine members of the board of directors for a new non-profit organization, the Tyler Family Circle of Care. Formerly known as the Trinity Mother Frances FamilyCARE Center, the Tyler Family Circle of Care will now operate as an independent clinic providing services to uninsured, underinsured, Medicare, and Medicaid pediatric and adult patients. The board was chosen to be representative of the demographics of the patient population at the new clinic, with each member bringing their own experience and expertise to this new standard of care serving the people of our community.
“The Trinity Mother Frances FamilyCARE Center has served our community for 17 years,” Ms. Hornbostel said. “Establishing this existing clinic as an independent community health clinic will allow for a fast-growing patient base of adults and children who do not currently have access to healthcare to be better served. With continued support and guidance from Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics, and support from the community, I believe the Tyler Family Circle of Care will be a shining star for our community.”
Ms. Hornbostel is also an active member of the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce where she serves as the chair of the Membership Services Committee and sits on the Medical and Aviation Committees. As a member of the Rotary Club of Tyler, she has served as president and is the current Foundation president. Ms. Hornbostel is the president of the Tyler Unity Center Board of Directors. She is active with the Better Business Bureau where she serves on the Ambassador and Accreditation Committee, and she is a member of the East Texas Food Bank Board of Directors, the Tyler Community Concert Association, and the Tyler Together Race Relations Forum. For the past three years Ms. Hornbostel has co-chaired the East Texas State Fair Senior Opening Day. She is a graduate of Leadership Tyler Class 12, and in 2010, she was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award and the Mary Howes Award for Service by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce.
“I initially became a volunteer to meet people and to become a part of my community, but I found that accepting opportunities to be a part of providing service to others blesses my own life every day,” Ms. Hornbostel said.
Born and raised in the St. Louis, Missouri area, Ms. Hornbostel has resided in Tyler for 16 years. She attended Belleville College in Belleville, Illinois, and Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, and received her Credit Union Executive Certification from the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. Ms. Hornbostel is a regional manager with United Heritage Credit Union. She has two adult children and four grandchildren.
“Having lived in the metropolitan cities of St. Louis and Austin, I treasure a chance meeting with friends at the store or a community event (in Tyler). I enjoy feeling connected to individuals and expanding my circles of friendship and care. My greatest love of Tyler is that we open meetings with an invocation, and we know and live the motto, ‘In God We Trust,’ ” Ms. Hornbostel said.
