For the twenty-fifth year, Tyler Junior College (TJC) is holding its scholarship golf tournament, the HGR General Contractors Scholarship Golf Tournament benefiting the TJC Foundation. The tournament will be held on Thursday, September 6, at Hollytree Country Club in Tyler and will feature a luncheon with guest speaker Jim Knox, a four-time Emmy-winning television sports journalist, producer, and personality.
As chairman of this year’s 2012 HGR General Contractors Scholarship Golf Tournament, Loren Bennett is encouraging the community to come out and participate and have the opportunity to see the impact of their support by meeting the scholarship recipients at the event.
“Sixty percent of all Tyler Junior College students require financial help, and scholarships provide invaluable assistance to these students,” Mr. Bennett said. “A sponsorship record was set during last year’s tournament, and as a result, 41 TJC students will receive a $1,000 scholarship during the upcoming academic year. We are hoping to beat that record at this year’s event.”
Mr. Bennett also serves on the board of directors for the TJC Foundation. He is a member of the Tyler Young Life Committee, the Greater Tyler Association of Realtors, and the American Association of Professional Landmen. Mr. Bennett is a past president of both The University of Texas at Tyler Patriots and the Tyler Smith County Chapter of Texas Exes. He is a past member of the City of Tyler Airport Advisory Board and the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce where he served as chairman of the SPORTyler Committee. Mr. Bennett is also a past recipient of the W.C. Windsor Award, presented with the purpose of encouraging leadership among young people in the community and to honor the outstanding citizen under the age of 40 for his or her contribution to the community of Tyler.
Mr. Bennett has resided in Tyler for 38 years. He is a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and earned his associate’s degree from TJC. He has attended The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas at Tyler. Mr. Bennett, and his wife, Melissa, have been married for six years and are the parents of Matthew Brown, 20, Ashley Brown, 19, Lauren Brown, 17, and Andrew Brown, 14. The Bennetts are members of Marvin United Methodist Church where Mr. Bennett serves as an usher.
“Through serving the church and the community alongside friends and family, I’ve learned that volunteerism is a gift and a blessing to both the recipients of service and the volunteers,” Mr. Bennett said.
