The Boys & Girls Clubs of East Texas offers a safe place for kids to learn and grow relationships with caring, adult professionals, and provides life-enhancing programs that build character to fill a child’s life with hope and opportunity. The club is excited to have a new Fine Arts program, Club Broadway, which exists to inspire and equip young people to reach their full potential through the arts.
The new program is directed by respected artist and local educator, George A. Faber II, who also serves on the Boys & Girls Club board of directors. Club Broadway is the realization of a dream Mr. Faber has had for many years and is modeled after highly respected art programs around the country. Held after school, programs will be offered in music, dance, drama, and visual art as well as exposure to professional teaching artists, master classes with world-class artists, student performing opportunities, professional concerts, and art events.
Outside of his volunteer role at Boys & Girls Club, Mr. Faber serves on the board of directors for Young Audiences of East Texas. He has also been a board member for the Discovery Science Place and has volunteered as an advisor for the East Texas Symphony Orchestra.
“My life has been deeply blessed,” Mr. Faber said. “My parents taught me that when God blesses your life as he has mine, you must share those blessings with those around you. They taught me that to those whom much is given, much is expected. My philosophy of volunteerism is to simply give back to the community in the way that God has so richly given to me.”
Born in Kilgore, Texas, Mr. Faber has resided in Tyler for 28 years. He earned his associate’s degree from Kilgore Junior College and his bachelor’s degree in music from Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) in Nacogdoches, Texas. Mr. Faber holds his master’s degree in secondary education and his administrator’s certification also from SFA. He is currently the director of the Visual and Performing Arts department for the Tyler Independent School District and has been with the school district for 31 years. He and his wife, Anita, have been married for 28 years and are the parents of two adult children, Candace and George, and they have one grandson, Zion. The Fabers are members of Green Acres Baptist Church where Mr. Faber serves as the head organist.
