The American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives communities across the nation and around the world a chance to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against this deadly disease.

Timothy Baker, a member of the board of directors for the Smith County American Cancer Society, is serving as the 2012 chair of Relay For Life, which will take place at the Robert E. Lee High School practice field.  Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events and will be held from 7:00 p.m. on April 20 to 7:00 a.m. on April 21.  The evening begins with a “Survivors Lap,” an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together to celebrate the victories they have achieved over cancer.  Then, participating teams join in and have a team member on the track at all times during the Relay.  Teams are formed through family, friends, local businesses, churches, and area schools, and include young and old alike! Relay For Life has raised more than $4 billion since its inception in 1985 and is an event for the whole family that includes music, games, and giveaways.

“There are many, many worthwhile causes in need of volunteers.  I believe that everyone has the ability to contribute in some way.  The key is to find something about which you are passionate.  Time is your most valuable resource; spend it well,” Mr. Baker said.

Born in Dallas, Texas, Mr. Baker has lived in Tyler for two years. He and his wife, Shannon, are still newlyweds, recently celebrating their first anniversary.  Mr. Baker is a graduate of Grand Saline High School in Grand Saline, Texas, and he received his bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles.

“I was raised in East Texas, and I learned long ago to appreciate what Tyler has to offer,” Mr. Baker said. “It’s large enough to keep one occupied, yet unlike many cities, it has not lost its sense of community. Consequently, there are wonderful people who are willing to give freely of their time and efforts. The people we reach through Relay For Life are not just names but the familiar faces we see time and again around the city.”
