Mrs. R. J. (Julia Faye) McMurrey was born in 1921, and on July 29, 2011, celebrated her ninetieth birthday. The Alzheimer’s Alliance of Smith County is honored that she remains actively engaged with their organization.
“Because my family has been personally impacted by the devastation of Alzheimer’s disease, I am passionate about helping other families making this difficult journey,” Mrs. McMurrey said. “I hope that my involvement will help increase the community’s awareness of the disease and the challenges families face every day. I also hope that others will join my effort to provide the financial resources necessary to support the programs and services of the Alzheimer’s Alliance of Smith County.”
Mrs. McMurrey is serving as honorary chair for the first 2011 Month of Memories (MOM), presented by the Alzheimer’s Alliance of Smith County. MOM is a series of events taking place during the month of November to recognize Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Their signature event will be the Moonlight Serenade Alzheimer’s Gala, to be held on Saturday, November 5, at Willow Brook Country Club in Tyler. Mrs. McMurrey will be honored at the Gala, which will also feature dining and live entertainment.
An active volunteer in the Tyler community for many years, Mrs. McMurrey is a member of the Kultu Mea Literary Club, the Festival Garden Club, and the Women’s Symphony League of Tyler. As a charter member of the Junior League of Tyler, Inc., she was instrumental in getting the Junior League started, helped organize the first group of volunteers, and remains a sustaining member of the League. She volunteered for the Alzheimer’s Alliance’s “Caregiver Helpline,” where she was able to visit with other caregivers in need of support and encouragement.
“I’ve always felt it is important to give back what’s been given to you. I’ve had a blessed life, and you have to return something back to your community. When much has been given, much is required of you,” Mrs. McMurrey said.
Born in Houston, Texas, Mrs. McMurrey has resided in Tyler for 79 years. She attended The University of Texas at Austin. Mrs. McMurrey and her late husband, R.J. McMurrey, are the parents of four adult children, Robert, Julia, Betty, and Amy. Mrs. McMurrey is currently a member of Green Acres Baptist Church.
“Today…I absolutely LOVE living here (Tyler). The people in Tyler are very giving, very philanthropic, and so kind and thoughtful. Over the years, I have developed numerous friendships, and I continue to enjoy long-term relationships. I just can’t imagine living some place where people aren’t connected,” Mrs. McMurrey said.
