Tom Slack believes for whatever ails a society, the only cure is education. This belief is why Mr. Slack is passionate about focusing his volunteer efforts in the areas of education. As he begins his third term as president and chairman of the Tyler Independent School District (TISD) Foundation Board of Directors, he hopes all members of the Tyler community and local businesses will join with the Foundation to improve education through the support and encouragement of the district’s public schools.
For the seventh year, Mr. Slack is chairing the 18th Annual Gil Hitt Memorial Golf Tournament, scheduled for November 7, 2011, at Hollytree Country Club in Tyler. This one-day tournament is the Foundation’s largest fundraiser, and donations support innovation for Tyler ISD teachers and students, including honoring top graduates and teachers. A significant amount of the Foundation’s donations go directly into the classroom to help with programs not typically funded by state or federal funding. The tournament will also coincide with a kickoff luncheon celebrating the Foundation’s 20-year history.
“I have had many blessings in my life and have worked hard all my life,” Mr. Slack said. “I believe in volunteering for the betterment of our community, most especially in the areas of education, as a display of gratitude for those who have supported me, as well as looking to assist our future leaders.”
Outside of his service to the TISD Foundation, Mr. Slack serves as board chairman for The University of Texas at Tyler School of Nursing Advisory Council. He also serves on the University’s advisory board.
Born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Mr. Slack has lived in Tyler for 30 years. He and his wife, Marcia, are the parents of four adult children, Lacy, Bliss, Trisha, and Preston. Mr. Slack obtained his accounting degree from Southwest Texas University. He is vice president of managed care at East Texas Medical Center and Chief Executive Officer of HealthFirst. Mr. and Mrs. Slack are members of First Christian Church of Tyler.
“The friendly nature of Tyler is one of welcoming new ideas and fresh energy, and the community rallies to support education in all forms, on all levels, for all citizens,” Mr. Slack said.
