A Tyler tradition for 32 years, the Junior League of Tyler’s Mistletoe & Magic, Unwrap the Magic, promises once again to give the gift of joy, bring back childhood Christmas memories, and inspire your imagination, all while raising funds for not-for-profit organizations that provide crucial services to the community. The annual event will be held November 11-13 at Harvey Convention Center. A Preview Party will be held the evening of November 10.
Mistletoe & Magic is a holiday market that includes a collection of more than 90 specialty boutiques and merchants from all over the nation, gathered together for a shopping spree in a festive atmosphere. The specialty items that will be showcased include antiques; beauty and bath; children's clothing and accessories; holiday; gourmet and kitchen; jewelry; home; and men and women's clothing and accessories.
Junior League of Tyler, Inc. (JLT) member Jennifer Watkins is serving as the public relations chairman of the 2010 Mistletoe & Magic committee.
“The 2010 theme, Unwrap the Magic, and logo, a gift wrapped package, illustrates the gift of Mistletoe & Magic to the community through the organizations and resources funded by the holiday market,” Mrs. Watkins said. “Each shopper who enters the doors of Mistletoe & Magic is also giving a gift when they support the event, the JLT’s largest yearly fundraiser that has helped us give back more than $6 million to better the community.”
Along with being an active member of the JLT, Mrs. Watkins also serves on the Tyler Cattle Baron’s Gala Committee and the Turn Tyler Pink Committee. She volunteers with the Texas Rose Festival, and the American Red Cross, and she serves on the Parent Teacher Association Board at Andy Woods Elementary School.
“It takes everyone giving of themselves to make our world, our community, and our schools a better place. Tyler supports an amazing amount of non-profit organizations, and new ones are constantly being formed. I believe this is due to the generosity of the people in Tyler who are also passionate and willing to become involved in causes they believe in,” Mrs. Watkins said.
Born in Houston, Texas, Mrs. Watkins has lived in Tyler for nine years. She is a graduate of Henderson High School in Henderson, Texas, and earned her bachelor of science degree from Texas A&M University. Mrs. Watkins and her husband, James, are the parents of six-year-old Owen. They are members of Marvin United Methodist Church.
“Tyler is a very philanthropic community. It’s expected, more often than not, that you will be serving on a committee, financially supporting an organization, or being hands-on assisting with an event. The community’s response is what makes Tyler a place that can support all of the passions and causes it does. I work for a non-profit organization, and I have learned that not every place is as giving as this one is,” Mrs. Watkins said.
