The 26th annual Azalea Orthopedics Scholarship Golf Tournament, benefitting the Tyler Junior College Foundation, provides scholarships to students pursuing careers in health care. Tyler Junior College (TJC) is committed to meeting the need for qualified individuals in the health care field through its new School of Nursing and Health Sciences facility. The facility is estimated to increase TJC healthcare graduates by 50 percent. The golf tournament also awards scholarships to deserving students across all areas of study.
Darin Newhouse has served on the TJC Foundation golf tournament committee for three years and is serving as chair of this year’s tournament. The event will take place on Thursday, September 5, at Hollytree Country Club in Tyler.
“Last year’s tournament was the most successful ever, and provided $64,000 in scholarships. For 2013, our goal is to exceed that record,” Mr. Newhouse said. “TJC and the TJC Foundation award $2 million in scholarships annually. However, hundreds of deserving applicants are turned away each year due to a lack of funds. By participating in the golf tournament, you can help meet this critical need and make a difference in the lives of TJC students.”
Outside of his service to the TJC Foundation, Mr. Newhouse is a member of the First Tee of Greater Tyler Board of Directors and serves as treasurer of the Men’s Golf Association at Hollytree Country Club. He has also coached little league baseball for the past three years.
“I believe that everyone has a duty to give of their time in some manner to better their community, and I believe that determining what one’s personal interests and gifts are can help direct a person into areas of service that they will have a passion for,” Mr. Newhouse said.
Mr. Newhouse was reared in Bryan/College Station, Texas, and has resided in Tyler for 12 years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian College in Abilene, Texas, and is employed as an officer and shareholder at Henry & Peters, P.C. Mr. Newhouse and his wife, Connie, have been married for 15 years and are the parents of Jackson, 10, and Brooklyn, 20 months. The Newhouses are members of Glenwood Church of Christ where Mr. Newhouse serves on the administration and finance committees.
“I believe Tyler is a very unique community that has a passion for giving unlike other communities of its size. I enjoy playing a small part in this mission,” Mr. Newhouse said.
