The Literacy Council of Tyler (LCOT) exists to impact the lives of undereducated adults, their families, and the community-at-large by providing programs that assist people in completing their education, finding employment, and being more self-sufficient in their daily lives. The LCOT offers basic education and both general educational development (GED) and English as a second language (ESL) classes. They also have a successful family literacy program at the Family Learning Center of Tyler. Their programs serve a three-county region, and LCOT reaches approximately 2,300 adult students annually with a staff of 44 and 360 volunteers.
For more than 20 years LCOT has hosted the Annual Corporate Spelling Bee. This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, August 5, at the CrossWalk Conference Center at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler. Through stiff competition, outrageous costumes, and contagious laughter, the Spelling Bee is a fun way for businesses and organizations to promote team spirit while supporting literacy at the same time.
Andrea R. Anderson is chairing the event this year and invites the community to come out in support of literacy. “This fun event is the primary fundraiser for LCOT,” Mrs. Anderson said. “Every $500 raised will pay for a student’s entire year of classes. It’s a wonderful time to celebrate literacy and have a great laugh.”
Outside of her service to the Literacy Council of Tyler, Mrs. Anderson is an active member of the Junior League of Tyler, Inc. where she currently serves as the assistant fund development vice president and has served in various League placements over the years.
“My volunteer philosophy comes from James Baldwin’s quote, ‘The world is before you, and you need not take it or leave it as it was when you came in…’. I believe we all have a responsibility to give back and make a difference,” Mrs. Anderson said. “There is so much need in this community, and collectively, we can all make an impact.”
Born in Tyler, Mrs. Anderson has resided in our community for 26 years. She is a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and received her bachelor’s degree from Austin College in Sherman, Texas. Mrs. Anderson earned her master’s degree in both healthcare administration and in business administration from the University of Houston at Clear Lake in Clear Lake, Texas. She and her husband, Todd, have been married for 20 years and are the parents of Trae, 16, and Taija, 12. The Andersons attend St. Louis Baptist Church in Tyler.
“There are so many outstanding non-profit organizations working diligently to make a difference in our community. Through my volunteer work with the Junior League of Tyler and now with the Literacy Council of Tyler, I’ve met some outstanding volunteers who are committed to improving the quality of life for residents of the East Texas community. My husband and I feel that we have been given gifts, and we simply work daily to do our part to make an impact,” Mrs. Anderson said.
