On Saturday, May 10, at Bergfeld Park, Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization will hold its 16th Annual Susan G. Komen Tyler Race for the Cure. Susan G. Komen is the largest network of breast cancer survivors and activists and fights to cure breast cancer at every stage.
The Race for the Cure is the largest 5K and 1 mile fun run/walk event in East Texas with more than 7,000 people participating. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds raised remains here in East Texas. These funds will provide grants to local health organizations for free mammograms, diagnostic testing, educational outreach, and financial assistance for women. Because of local support, and through events like the Susan G. Komen Tyler Race for the Cure, the Tyler affiliate has invested more than $2 million over the last 16 years in community breast health programs throughout Smith County.
Misty Jones is serving as co-chair for this year’s Race for the Cure, alongside volunteer, Kristen McPherson.
“Breast cancer has been a part of my life since I can remember,” Mrs. Jones said. “My grandmother, three aunts, and my mother were all diagnosed at different times in their lives, and they all bravely fought and lost the battle. My mother was awarded a grant from Komen that would help her get the treatment she needed. It is because of this organization that women, like my mother, are given opportunities that can help give hope to future generations.”
In addition to her commitment to the Susan G. Komen Tyler Race for the Cure, Mrs. Jones is also an active member of the Junior League of Tyler, Inc.
“My volunteer philosophy is that you should find a cause that you’re passionate about or that has personally touched your heart and give back,” Mrs. Jones said. “While you’re helping others, you’re also feeding your own soul.”
Born in Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Jones has resided in Tyler for seven years. She is a graduate of Brownsboro High School and a graduate of the Tyler Junior College Dental Hygiene Program. Mrs. Jones is employed as a dental hygienist at Bullard Road Dental. She and her husband, Justin, have been married for 10 years and are the parents of Collin, 4, and Drew, 2. The Jones are members of Marvin United Methodist Church where Mrs. Jones is active in the Mothers of Preschoolers organization.
“I love that my family lives in such a giving community. Tylerites are always more than willing to help out in any way, whether through their time or their resources,” Mrs. Jones said.
