On Thursday evening, October 24, the East Texas Literacy Council (ETLC) will host their Scrabble with Friends annual fundraiser, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The event will be held at the First United Methodist Church Faith Center and scrabble teams comprised of eight friends, family, church members, or even co-workers will compete against one another to build the highest scoring board in three short rounds. All level of players are welcome and teams can play to win or just play for fun. Prizes will be awarded and the evening also includes hors d’ouvres and a fabulous silent auction.
ETLC board of director members Mary Price and Linda Neuman are serving as co-chairs this year and invite the community to come out in support of this worthwhile cause.
“This year to date, the ETLC has provided basic literacy and English as a second language instruction to 576 adults for a total thus far of 17,055 instructional hours,” Mrs. Neuman said. “As each adult gains skills it impacts not only his or her life, but that of their entire family.”
Mrs. Price hails from Marshall, Texas, and graduated from Marshall High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Mary, and her husband of 35 years, Roy, have three adult sons and two grandsons. Mrs. Price is a member of the Longview Independent School District Foundation board of directors and also a lifetime Parent Teacher Association member. She is active in the Junior League of Longview and is a member of the Rendezvous Club. Mr. and Mrs. Price are active members of First United Methodist Church and Mrs. Price serves as a sacristy volunteer.
“Volunteering was a family tradition,” Mrs. Price said. “I feel it is important to give back to your community. When I volunteer, I always make new acquaintances or learn something new.”
Originally from Alexandria, Virginia, Mrs. Neuman has lived in Longview for 35 years. She graduated from North Little Rock High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, and earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Mrs. Neuman and her husband, Jim, have been married 40 years and are the parents of three adult children and three granddaughters. In addition to serving as co-chair for Scrabble with Friends, Mrs. Neuman is also the ETLC board secretary, vice president, and president elect. She is a member of the Junior League of Longview and the Rendezvous Club. Mr. and Mrs. Neuman are members of First United Methodist Church where Mrs. Neuman serves as a receptionist volunteer and a wedding coordinator.
“Volunteerism makes our community a better place to live and it is a way to give back to a community that gives so much to its people,” Mrs. Neuman said.
