The Asbury House Child Enrichment Center will host their annual Garage Sale Fundraiser from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Friday, August 2, at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Longview. A major fundraiser for Asbury House, the event will provide funds for general operations as well as services to benefit the community. In preparation for the event, organizers will be collecting items such as furniture, electronics, kitchen accessories, bathroom and bedroom accessories, children’s needs, books and much more over the next few weeks.
Started in 1969, Asbury House is an outreach ministry of the United Methodist Churches in the North Texas district, providing child care for children of financially disadvantaged families. More than 60 children, ages three to five years old, attend the preschool while their parents are either working or attending school. Mrs. Susie Dunn has been a longtime advocate of the Asbury House, currently serving as chairwoman for the annual Garage Sale.
“All those who volunteer know the joy of volunteering.” Mrs. Dunn said. “God has given us all different gifts and I believe He wants us to use them to help our community.”
In addition to her involvement with the Asbury House, Mrs. Dunn has served on numerous boards in the past including Hospice of Longview, Windridge Therapeutic Equestrian Center, and Junior League of Longview, where she served as president.
“Volunteering in Longview improves our community but also gives such great joy,” Mrs. Dunn said. “You are never too young or too old to volunteer. If we all volunteer just a little each year, what a difference we can all make.”
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Mrs. Dunn has resided in Longview for 37 years. She and her husband, Michael, who were high school sweethearts, have been married 40 years and have three adult children and six grandchildren. Mrs. Dunn is a graduate of The University of Texas at Dallas. She received her bachelor’s degree in medical technology and is currently employed for Good Shepherd Medical Center as a medical technologist. The Dunns are members of First United Methodist Church in Longview.
“Living in Longview has been a wonderful experience. My husband and I raised our family here and our children received a great education through the Longview Independent School District. We have made such good friends while living here,” Mrs. Dunn said.
