Buckner Foster Care and Adoption Services is a ministry grounded in Christian principles with a commitment to provide a safe and loving home environment for at-risk children and orphans. Buckner believes foster care and adoption are a profound way to change a child’s life forever.
This is also the belief of James E. Hortman, who understands firsthand the blessings that come to a family through adoption. As a grandfather of five, Mr. Hortman’s youngest grandchild was adopted through Buckner Adoption Services and came through the Buckner Foster Care Program.
Now, as a volunteer for Buckner, Mr. Hortman is involved with the upcoming 12th Annual Sporting Clays Challenge, to be held at Praire Creek Ranch. This is the largest fundraising event for Buckner and will begin on Thursday, July 14 with a Junior Tournament and continue Friday, July 15, with the Twilight Event. The final day will be Saturday, July 16, with the Early Riser Event. Proceeds raised benefit Buckner Children and Family Services of Northeast Texas.
In addition to his volunteer service with Buckner, Mr. Hortman is also involved with the Boys & Girls Club of the Big Pines and their annual golf classic fundraiser.
Mr. Hortman’s philosophy of volunteerism is give of your time, make yourself available, and then get ready for the blessings that follow! “It’s really a joy to work with enthusiastic and energetic individuals of our community and organizations that are committed to making the benefits a success, especially for the individuals in need of the offered services,” Mr. Hortman said.
Originally from Marshall, Texas, Mr. Hortman graduated from Marshall High School and studied architectural engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He has been a part of the Longview community for 40 years and is the president and owner of J. E. Hortman Co., LTD. Mr. Hortman and his wife of 43 years, Reyna, are the parents of two adult children and five grandchildren. The Hortmans’ are members of First Baptist Church where Mr. Hortman is involved with the Longview Interfaith Hospitality Network (LIHN), is a volunteer captain for the Red Shirt Ministry, and is a greeter for Sunday morning worship. He has also served as a deacon and traveled with the church on mission trips to Mexico.
