2011/01/30 - Yvonne Dike Swain

Yvonne Dike Swain

More than one-in-three female adults have some form of cardiovascular disease.  All cardiovascular diseases combined claim more women’s lives each year than all forms of cancer combined.
On February 4, the American Heart Association (AHA) will hold their annual Go Red For Women (GRFW) luncheon, an event that brings women together to celebrate the passion and power women have to wipe out heart disease and stroke.  The luncheon, to be held at Pinecrest Country Club, will include a “Purse”onality auction, vendor displays, and feature keynote speaker Lisa Smartt, author, humor columnist, and national motivational speaker.
As a volunteer for AHA, Yvonne Dike Swain is serving as chair for this year’s GRFW luncheon.  Having had family members who have survived heart surgery, Mrs. Swain understands firsthand the effects heart disease can have on a family. That fact is the driving force behind her volunteer work with the AHA.
“Volunteering gives me the opportunity to educate family and friends about the risk involved when you do not take care of your health,” Mrs. Swain said. “I believe it is very important to volunteer where you can and give back to your community.”
In addition to her commitment to AHA, Mrs. Swain has been a volunteer at the Cancer Center and is a past member of the Junior League.  She is also active in the Southernwood Garden Club.
Mrs. Swain was reared in Houston and has lived in Longview 24 years. She had one daughter, the late Cateche Dike.  Mrs. Swain is married to Lee Swain.  They attend Mobberly Baptist Church where Mrs. Swain serves as a ten-year member of Bible Study Fellowship.
“One of the many things I love about living in Longview are the friendships you make with your doctors, bankers, and for me, my pastor and church (members).  Reaching out to others is easy when you are involved in as great a community as Longview,” Mrs. Swain said.
