Emergency medicine physician, Dr. Brian King, understands firsthand how heart disease can strike even the most unsuspecting individual. In November 2008, after life-saving, five-way bypass surgery, he became a heart disease survivor.
On Saturday, October 30, at the Good Shepherd Institute for Healthy Living, the community will join together to raise funds for the American Heart Association (AHA) Start! Heart Walk 2010
. Dr. King is serving as chairman for the Heart Walk
this year and says he considers it a privilege to help raise awareness and funding for the nation’s number one and number three killers…heart disease and stroke.
“The Heart Walk
highlights Longview’s amazing facilities for fitness, education, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to lower the risk of these diseases. (I am) committed to serving our community and helping everyone live the healthiest life possible,” Dr. King said.
In addition to his service to the AHA, Dr. King serves as board president and medical clinic director at the Hiway 80 Rescue Mission. He is also a coach for Dixie and Deep East Texas baseball.
“I believe we should all use our God-given talents to serve others passionately. This should come as an overflow of the love that Christ has shown to us,” Dr. King said.
Originally from Houston, Texas, Dr. King has lived in Longview 14 years. He earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and attended The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Dr. King completed his emergency medicine residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital-Wake Forest. He and his wife of 21 years, Trayce, are the parents of three children, Emily, 15, Mason, 13, and Matthew, 9. The Kings are members of Mobberly Baptist Church, where Dr. King serves as a deacon and has been a discussion leader for Bible Study Fellowship. He is also a Pine Cove Christian Camps ambassador.
“My wife and I grew up in East Texas, so this is home,” Dr. King said. “We enjoy raising our children in Longview’s friendly neighborhoods and top-notch schools, and we attend a Bible-based church that is second to none. I’m fortunate to work with an outstanding ER group. It’s gratifying that with just a little of my time, I can be used to make a difference in the lives of others.”
