Educator and entrepreneur, Charles Gutierrez, was born in San Diego, California, and moved with his family to Texas when Mr. Gutierrez was just three-years-old. At the age of 10, the Gutierrez family moved once again, this time, to Martin’s Mill, Texas, the childhood home of his mother.
Mr. Gutierrez attended school at the Martin’s Mill Independent School District and then transferred to Canton High School, where he graduated in 1964. He received his associate’s degree at Tyler Junior College. Mr. Gutierrez then attended East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in math, health, and physical education in 1971, and his master’s degree in guidance and counseling in 1976.
Mr. Gutierrez began his teaching career in 1975, returning to Martin’s Mill ISD, where he taught math. He also coached the fifth through the eighth grade basketball teams. He would later go on to be named the first modern day girls basketball coach in Wills Point. His teaching career led him to a number of east Texas schools, including Crandall, Kemp, Beckville, Grand Saline, Mabank, and Edgewood ISD, where he eventually retired.
While still teaching, Mr. Gutierrez began a second career in the health food business. Twenty years later his business is still going strong. He continues to own and operate Canton Health Foods in downtown Canton.
Mr. Gutierrez currently serves on the board of directors for the Van Zandt County Country Club. He is still a member of several basketball associations across the state, and continues to follow the sport at the high school level. Mr. Gutierrez attends Cross Brand Cowboy Church in Tyler.
Mr. Gutierrez enjoys the size and friendliness of Canton and has many longtime friends. Over the years, he has had an impact on many people’s lives throughout our county. Mr. Gutierrez continues to leave a legacy in our community. We are fortunate that he has chosen to call Canton “home.”
