Johnny and Anna McDaniel

CANTON  2013/03/07

Fond childhood memories and relatives living in the local area played a part in bringing Johnny and Anna McDaniel to Canton to retire almost 20 years ago.  The McDaniels particularly enjoy the country lifestyle and the fact that they are not too far from Dallas.

The couple have been educators for much of their lives.  Throughout his 41 year career in education, Mr. McDaniel taught students from third grade to adults and also served as a principal. Mrs. McDaniel taught for 31 years, with 17 of those years teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and four levels of Russian.  Both educators retired from the Dallas Independent School District in 2004.

The McDaniels have certainly made an impact in the Canton community.  They are members of the Main Street Board where Mr. McDaniel has served as board president, and they are both members of the Lions Club.  Mrs. McDaniel is involved with the Canton Women’s League. They attend CrossRoads Church in Canton where Mrs. McDaniel serves as a trustee and the couple attends the weekly Life Group Bible study. When they are not dedicating their volunteer time they enjoy spending time on their farm.  They raise dairy heifers to sell and previously raised cutting horses.  They are the owners of the oldest registered Chihuahua kennel in the United States.  Their Chihuahuas have gone to customers all over the world including Europe, Asia, Alaska, and Mexico.

To celebrate their retirement the couple traveled to Greece for the Summer Olympic Games in 2004.  Their profession allowed many summer travel vacations across the United States and across the world.  They have visited all but two continents. Their favorite overseas travels include trips to Russia, China, New Zealand, and Australia.  The McDaniels are also avid ‘70s’ skiers and hope to continue skiing into their 80s.  Aside from traveling around the world the couple makes certain to include time to visit their three children, Johnny, Elisabeth, and Kyle, along with their eight grandchildren.

Mr. McDaniel grew up in Terrell and Mesquite and recalls coming to Canton for First Monday as a child.  He graduated from Mesquite High School and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas.  Mr. McDaniel holds degrees in agriculture, biology, and school administration.

Mrs. McDaniel grew up in Crowley, Louisiana.  Her family moved to Commerce and she graduated from high school there. Mrs. McDaniel earned her bachelor’s degree in French and English from the University of California, and received her master’s degree from East Texas State University.

Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel have given, and continue to give, much time, energy, and service to others.  We are fortunate they chose Canton as their retirement home.  Thank you for making a difference in our community.
